Our Story

The Welcome Centre is one of the largest food banks in the region and has been supporting people in South Kirklees for over 20 years.

Since 1997 the work of the Centre has expanded greatly and we receive referrals from many Kirklees front-line services and agencies, with whom we work in partnership. 100 agencies use our service currently compared with 19 in 1998. The distribution of packs has increased most years and we gave out 8782 packs in 2015/16 compared with 188 in 1997/98. We are now giving out around 150-200 packs a week.

The Centre has been based in the Huddersfield Mission in the town centre since April 1997, having previously operated under the name of the St. Thomas’ Project from St. Thomas’ Church in Thornton Lodge from 1992-1997. We now have our own ground floor entrance on Lord Street to the left of the Mission Café. In addition, in 2016 the Centre found it necessary to rent an industrial unit at 7 Queens Mill Industrial Estate, Lockwood  as an off-site warehouse to keep up with demand.

In 2000 the Centre became a Registered Charity, with a Management Committee elected annually by its members. In 2013 we became a charitable company with a Board of Trustees/Directors, supported by sub-groups who meet regularly.

The distribution of packs has risen dramatically due to the recession, local economy, welfare reforms and general increase in poverty in our community.

We currently have a team of over 70 volunteers who are vital to our service.
