What we do

Claire is looking for work, but debt and benefit reductions are making things difficult. We were able to give her a 3 person food pack, but most importantly a breathing space. That’s what we do: offer practical, short-term help for people in crisis.

We are a small registered charity that provides practical, short-term support to help local people who are in crisis and who have been referred to us by a front-line service in Kirklees.

We offer basic essentials such as food, toiletries, household items and bedding as well as a listening ear and information about where to get further help.

We provide opportunities and support for volunteers and try to help them to find meaningful employment.

A great deal of work goes on behind the scenes for us to provide the packs and running the food bank is a huge logistical challenge . You take a look inside the Welcome Centre by watching our short video.

Our volunteers and core staff all help to:

  • Organise the donated items (check they are in date and storing them in date order) ready to make up the packs

  • Buy fresh food like bread, fresh milk, spread, fruit and vegetables etc with cash donations

  • Check all bedding, towels and wash household items to be certain they are clean and then pack and store them appropriately

  • Respond to the service users needs – referral agencies tell us what is needed and we get the packs ready, most are collected on the same day

  • When the packs are collected, usually by the service user, we appreciate it can be very difficult to have to come for items and we try to make them feel welcome and be supportive. If they need to talk we offer a listening ear and information and sign posting to specialist services, if required.

Service users are referred by the 100 local front line services, who always refer by telephone (no paperwork required) usually on the same day.

Frequently asked questions:

  • Where does all your food come from?

    We receive about 70% of our food from donations and we have to purchase the rest.

  • Can anyone get a pack?

    We support anyone in extreme crisis, who is referred to us, and establish the issues by working closely with the referring agency, checking details and requesting accompanying documents, as required.

  • Do you only help the homeless?

    No.The majority of people we support do have some form of accommodation, whether it be permanent or temporary housing, a refuge, bed and breakfast, sofa- surfing. We do also regularly give substantial support to a small number of people who are street homeless.

  • How many packs do you give out?

    We give out approximately 150 packs a week and expect to give out around 8,500 + packs in 2015-16

  • Do supermarkets support you? 

    We have good relations with most of the local supermarkets who support us in many ways from charity bag packs, food donations and by having  donation points etc. We are always looking at ways to forge new partnerships with retail outlets in our community.

  • Do you need volunteers? 

    We rely on a small team of staff, a small board of trustees and over 70 regular volunteers. We are particularly keen to offer placements to volunteers who are looking to get back into employment and want to gain skills, confidence and training in various aspects of a working environment.
